Bigots

Hate speech towards atheists has become so casual and commonplace that the studio audience and Tyra laugh.

Intolerance such as this should be exposed, and any links that help bring this information to a wider audience are much appreciated. It’d be great to see someone with some Photoshop skills mock up an image of this clown with a shoe on his head.

Lame. Atheists have morals. Whatever, it’s just Steve Harvey. It’s a sign that people are actually saying “I’m an Atheist” OUT LOUD. That’s a major victory in my book.

Atheists don’t need religion to have morals. We have morals because we think it’s good to be good, not because we’ll rot in hell if we don’t.

I’m more worried about the fact that people think Steve Harvey is funny. You know, I’m not a huge fan of Katt Williams (I like him all right), but he was A-1, 100%, Grade-A Righteous when he called Steve Harvey out for referring to himself as an “Original King of Comedy.”

As if everyone forgot about Richard Pryor.

White people in suits don’t talk like that; white people in dirty overalls do. So I’m thinking: television will let any moron voice his opinion if he wears a suit. This is why there is more assfuckery spoken on the air by people who wear suits. They can pass the initial studio riffraff scan and then say stupid shit like this.

Most blacks are religious, as evidenced by the severe homophobia in the black community. When I say I’m an atheist I get severe backlash in much the same form as I would if I said I was gay. But after I tell them that I’m not sucking some jew crackers cock, and kissing his ass, and working on his fucking plantation, they STFU.

Dude. If we attacked someone that disliked atheists every time they said it, the world would be rather empty. This is the new, atheist-cause-it’s-cooooooool Reddit, I know, but does that mean that we need to stoop to the level of these people, just to assure ourselves of our position? Of course it does. But do it in private.

I see no bigotry, which is intolerance of others opinion. Steve simply disagrees.

There are plenty of examples of ‘human created morals’ rather than Judeo-Christian ones and quite a few have been the worst human atrocities in history: pol pot, Nazis, Communist Russia, Vietnam(post US pullout).

If humans can evolve their own morals, why was the 1900-1999 the bloodiest century in human history?

Sorry to break it to the brave athiests, but the “morals are what we all agree they are” is a dead end road. Each new generation will stretch them further down a degenerative road.

@wtf The fact that people will bash anything is not an excuse for this kind of bigotry. If I have the context right he was saying that atheists don’t deserve to be in a relationship. He is making effectively the same argument that a white man would have made about his daughter dating a black man in the past. So its not that we have thin skin or “can’t take it” we are simply standing up for ourselves, defending ourselves from slander.

  23. dimplemonkey Says:

Not being an apologist for Steve Harvey but I think what he was trying to explain but failed to eloquently communicate is that in order for any relationship to work between two people, they need to be like-minded in their interests, morals, and spirituality. While there will always be exceptions to the rule, if you’re Christian, then date Christians. If you’re Muslim, then date a Muslim, if your a zookeeper, date a veterinarian, if you’re an atheist, then date atheists, etc. On the outside, it may seem like you’re being exclusive in your choice but in reality, you’re simply playing the percentages should you want your relationship to escalate to more intimate levels. This especially comes into serious play when you have kids.

    Makes obvious sense.

Don’t let his snap statements cause you to make snap judgments.

Oh, please. Anyone who has watched this guy’s TV show and still cares what he thinks about atheism, or any other issue, needs a hobby, pronto.

He’s an entertainer, and a very limited one at that. That he is blinkered to believe that you have to have “a relationship with God” is only one of about 1,500 signs that he is a shallow meat puppet.

I hope his denunciation is the worst injustice I experience all week.

Since “good” is subjective, atheists can and do change the meaning of the word to justify anything and everything. With no foundation upon which to base their beliefs, they hardly notice as the shifting grounds beneath their moral superiority complex pulling them into the sinkhole of human narcissism. As evidenced by the misinterpretation of Mr Harvey’s comments on this blog. All Steve was commenting on was that by dating an atheist you are going into the relationship without one of the better barometers of human character. Generally speaking, all religious dogma supports the idea that you do to others as you would have them do to you. The methods and implementation are different but the ideas are still very similar. Wouldn’t you like to know up front if a partner feels this way? So not to waste anymore time than you have to in life? Only an insecure narcissistic godless atheist would take Mr. Harvey’s comments personally, or are you saying he doesn’t have the right to share his opinions when asked? All tyranny and injustice by the state can be traced directly to the influence of atheists, oh no? Ask Hitler, Mao, Lenin, Stalin, Marx, Engels, Mussolini, Castro, Chavez, Hirohito, Kim Jong Il, Amin, Peron, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Milosevic, Pinochet…… It isn’t a surprise that all of these rulers tried to eliminate all religious influences in their society so as to better achieve their end goals…..

He is simple and does not understand what he is saying. What he is really talking about is not Morals but about beliefs. What he really means is, “How do I know that this person believes that we have the right to dictate our beliefs on everyone else because of a divine right which we neither have to prove or even back up with valid information.”

It is the way that people who believe speak to each other to validate their own thinking.

  33. Michael the undogmatic atheist Says:

The problem is just that, that people have been brainwashed into thinking atheists “believe in nothing.” We who are not religious will only make things worse by reacting negatively and putting them down…this will not advance enlightenment.

The correct response is a polite but firm correction, putting a positive focus out there: atheists believe in plenty of things… we believe, same as most religious folk, that you should not violate another person for your benefit—that is, I think, a fundamental part of most atheists’ opposition to religious fanaticism. That is a worthy moral compass to have.

Many of us atheists also believe in the power of unconditional love, love that says “you don’t need to be anything or do anything to be loved. I just love you for who you are.” This is what the concept of Jesus’ love gives to Christians (thought there is the concept of hell, still, Jesus’ love is considered infinite no matter what). Find common cause with your religious brother/sister, just as they should with you.

I believe there is and always will be zillions of wonders out there that human beings will never know about, no matter how much very useful and important science we develop…though I don’t believe in a “god,” especially one with human emotions like love and jealousy, I certainly don’t believe in nothing! But it is important not to take people’s misconceptions personally, just bear with them and listen, and they will open up. 90% of the time people are not as messed up as their “leaders,” and they are more open than you would initially think to consider other points of view.

    Taken out of context.

Based on the use of the word “relationship” I wonder if his over-all point was religious, or simply an abbreviated way to say that someone needs to believe in something bigger and greater than himself to stay grounded. And that is certainly something atheists can do.

How is his statement any different from me saying, “Best watch your wallet around those niggers. You know their monkey brains don’t process right and wrong the way normal folks do.”

And if you honestly think that “Athiesm is a choice and being black isn’t” is a valid argument, you can fuck right off.

  46. Badger3k Says:

Funny that by claiming that morality is based on the whim of a god, he makes the claim that morality is extremely subjective and can change in a second (or over time, as a walk through Leviticus can tell how what is “moral” has changed). It’s simply the Euthyphro dilemma (http://wiki.ironchariots.org/index.php?title=Euthyphro_dilemma)

Of course, as said, the idea that someone does something because they either fear retribution (hell), or desire a reward (heaven), makes any of the so-called moral actions rather shallow. Raymond Smullyan makes this argument in “The Tao is Silent” (fun book to read).

Otherwise, there is a lot of work being done in the evolutionary origins of morality, and many books have been written on that.

As for the idea that the 20th century had more deaths than other eras, you have to look at populations and technology – if the Inquisition, or the religious bigots who invaded the Americas, had advanced technology, we would have seen a larger death count. There is more to it than that, but the “what caused more deaths” arguments also fail on other levels (such as the motivations of the individuals involved), so they are really, really weak.
